For some people, myself included before I began working on cruises, the Faroe Islands is a country shrouded in mystery. I hadn’t a clue where the islands were, or what you could do were you to visit – I’d only really heard of the country through being a football fan, and seeing the national team regularly suffer heavy defeats as one of the worst countries to take part in qualifying for major tournaments.
However some of the ports on the Faroe Islands are quite popular for cruise travellers, especially those sailing on luxury lines, and now my ignorance has been replaced with a desire to hop on-board a ship and head there myself to see all of the sights.
One of the main attractions of the Faroe Islands is the natural beauty that remains almost completely unspoiled by man. Even the few buildings that you will see are interesting and colourful, particularly at one of the most popular ports, Torshavn, a pretty village home to friendly locals only too happy to share stories of heritage and folklore.
It’s by far the most popular port, with other destinations such as Klaksvik and Runavik visited by some of the non-luxury lines but Torshavn attracting the most ships by far. And it’s the incredible views across rolling hills and the surrounding islands that attracts so many, with excursions including drives around the region along with small-boat cruises, perfect for wildlife spotting. And while you visit the Faroe Islands be sure to sample some of the local speciality dishes including pancakes and freshly-caught fish.
In 2014, there are visits to the Faroe Islands by some of the top six star cruise lines, including Crystal Cruises, Oceania Cruises, Seabourn Cruises and Silversea Cruises, so you’ve plenty of opportunities to book yourself onto a voyage. Do it now before they all sell out – trust me, you’ll love it.
