Greenland is an unknown world of green fjords, ice-capped mountains, glaciers and ice bergs. This isn’t your typical cruise holiday as more than 80% of Greenland is under ice and the main mode of transport of by dog sled, but with some of the most dramatic landscapes in the world on offer, Greenland is most definitely an island worth exploring…
Simply sailing along Greenland’s coast is enough to take your breath away. Make sure you have the camera at the ready as you come across magnificent ice-bergs which soar out of the ocean. Encounters with whales are almost certain here, with species such as the humpback whale, minke whale and fin whale all roaming the waters.
Each port that you visit offers something that little bit different from the next. Nuuk is the capital of Greenland where a stroll along the waterfront amongst the colourful buildings and colonial harbour is a delightful experience. Alternatively you can learn all about Greenland’s ancient history in the National Museum, or the younger explorers get the chance to write a letter to Santa and have a picture taken of them posting their letter at the huge post box in the town.
The southernmost town of Greenland is Nanortalik and offers some of the islands most awe-inspiring fjords and is the place where you will find the country’s only natural forest. If you are lucky, you can see the northern lights from here and you may even get the chance to spot a polar bear as well.
Narsarsuaq is said to be the place where the Vikings first made their settlements when they came to Greenland. Exploring the Viking ruins is a favourite of many visiting here and you can even take a boat ride across the bay from Narsarsuaq to see the impressive statue of Leif Eriksson, who was the first European to land in North America.
