Is there such a thing as a ‘best destination’?

There are two main elements to every cruise holiday – your ship, and the experience you have on-board; and the destination that you travel to. Regardless of whether you’re the kind of person who explores and takes up every excursion possible, or if you’d rather spend all of your time on-board, it still matters where you go.

One of the questions that always comes up from new people, or from people who don’t make up their own minds easily, is “which is the best destination for a cruise?” And it would be lovely if there was a simple answer. The idea of a best destination though, one that’s clearly head-and-shoulders above every other, just doesn’t exist.

Everyone has their favourites, and they might tell you they’re the best – my own is St Petersburg, as has been well-documented, because of the incredible design of the buildings and the canal network that lends a picturesque bent to the city – but that is all just opinion, and of course everyone is different.

And there are plenty of different factors too which can affect the decision. For example, the Mediterranean in August is a completely different prospect to the Mediterranean in October. It’ll be much warmer in August generally, but it’ll also be much busier with plenty of tourists milling around every popular landmark. So it depends on what you’re looking for.

So if you aren’t sure on where you want to go, you can read our detailed destination guides to find out what each part of the world offers, and make up your mind from that.
