Exploring the British Isles One of the key features of expedition cruising is the destinations you're able to visit and my itinerary offered insights into some stunning areas of the UK. From boarding in Leith, we sailed first to Cromarty Firth, where we took a shore excursion to Loch Ness and Urquhart Castle. On our third day, we arrived in Kirkwall, the capital of the Orkney Islands and home to the Rings of Brodgar. Our excursion took us here to witness first-hand the ancient stones before we ventured to the quaint town of Stromness and then returned to the ship. After a quick lunch, we headed back out again for a hike to Mull Head Nature Reserve where you can spot birds nesting along the cliffside and see Viking ruins. In Fair Isle, I tried the kayaking excursion where expert guides accompany you to paddle into the ocean. During our experience, I spotted puffins, guillemots and many more birds as well as seals. It was incredible! In the afternoon, I went back out again on a Zodiac excursion where you can climb a cliff and watch puffins from above. Our last days included stops in Mousa, the Isle of Noss and Lerwick, which offered trips to see the ancient Broch, explore the national nature reserve nearby and meet some Shetland ponies.
Settling into Seabourn Venture I joined Seabourn Venture in Leith, Edinburgh, where I was greeted at the port and the crew took care of my luggage while I headed to the Colonnade for a light bite. The ship features six dining options as well as the standard room service included with Seabourn. Another signature feature is the Seabourn Square - one of my favourite spots on the whole ship. It serves as the hub for all goings on, with a coffee and snack bar, library and guest services, and it offers some really beautiful places to relax while sailing. Some new additions to the expedition ships include the Discovery Centre which is used as a briefing room and theatre; Expedition Lounge for pre-dinner cocktails; and the Bow Lounge where you can find snacks and displays showcasing the ship's position and progress. I stayed in a Veranda Suite during my sailing. The ship offers 132 all-veranda, all ocean-front suites, so no matter where you stay you can enjoy private outdoor space which is perfect for capturing every moment you travel. MY suite included a living space and queen-sized bed as well as a walk-in wardrobe, fully-stocked bar, spacious bathroom with bath and shower, as well as use of my own robes and slippers while relaxing.
